NYSE close, Nikkei futures, after-hours trading
The weekend NY stock market showed mixed to little change, with the tying-aid bill rejection and expanded strikes by automobile unions (UAW) weighing on sentiment.
Inflation indicators released that day did not show numbers as strong as market expectations. Although a strong buying start occurred, concerns about the economy’s outlook grew as the risk of a government shutdown became more realistic.
Monthly performance saw the Nasdaq’s decline as the largest this year, surpassing the March Silicon Valley collapse.
For weekly changes, the mid- to small-cap index (S&P 400, Russell 2000), Nasdaq (Composite, Nasdaq-100), and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index SOX all rose vs. last week’s close.
Declines were in the Nikkei futures, Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and S&P 100 (large-cap index).
Nikkei futures after-hours declined, down 215 yen to 31,800. The high was 32,130 at 22:28, the low was 31,740 at 3:02.
