U.S. stock market close NY; Nikkei futures after-hours trading
All three major indices finished lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average ending down for the fifth straight session.
Pressure from higher policy rates in the U.S. and Europe (hawkish persistence), concerns about economic slowdown, and the weaker-than-expected flash PMIs from the U.S. and Europe released on the 23rd all contributed to the subdued tone.
By index, the SOX semiconductor index fell 1.7%, the Russell 2000 down 1.4%, and the broader utilities index down 1.59%, among others.
All 11 sectors were negative, with information technology down 0.25% and health care down 0.32% as the least negative.
Stocks individually: Apple reached a 52-week high (closing price down), while Meta Platforms, Netflix and other BIG TECH remained solid.
Nikkei futures after-hours trading continued to fall, but the decline narrowed; the closing price was down 70 yen at 32,600, with the session low at 32,345 (large at 32,350).
