NY Stock Market Outlook (Day 24)
Nikkei futures as of 17:16 on the 24th: 30,590 -20; USD/JPY 138.57-58
US stock futures: Dow -78.00, S&P 500 -9.50, Nasdaq -29.50 (US futures, as of 17:18)
If no progress is made on the debt ceiling issue, expect a continued decline; if signs of a resolution appear, the story could change, but at this moment we do not expect the resolution to translate into results.
After the closing bell, Nvidia, the US semiconductor company, will announce results; if they react positively in after-hours trading, it would be a positive factor for stock prices (Nikkei futures).
However, that reaction tends to be more for Nasdaq futures in the US market, and last night had a negative reaction to retailer earnings.
Dow Jones Industrial Average is approaching the 200-day moving average and the lower bound of the daily chart's Ichimoku cloud; if it ends with a break below, the impact on Japanese stocks will be significant and carry higher risk.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index has fallen below the 200-day moving average, suggesting potential negative spillovers to the Asian markets; the debt ceiling issue in the US needs to move toward a resolution.
Fortunately, growth and standard stock indices are rising; medium- and small-cap stocks are gaining interest, and for the time being, the focus is on small- and mid-cap stocks in each market, with potential renewed investment in tech driven by Nvidia.
Key drivers of stock price volatility include the FOMC minutes and Nvidia earnings.
