Don’t slack off during the year-end and New Year holidays—set your goals for the next year.
Hello everyone, I am Yutori.
In this series, I will share ideas on how to become wealthy without diving into specific, obscure FX methods. I myself work as a salaryman in a white-collar company with long overtime hours, but my living expenses are covered by my salary, and I’ve started accumulating assets as additional income has come in.
Salaryman’s Winter Vacation
I am writing this at the end of the year; there are only a few days left of this year.
As a salaryman, I am closing out work and entering a brief rest period where I can finally do what I want to do.
What should I do in this limited time?
Sleeping, drinking, gambling, and eating delicious foods are all fine, but there are things I want to do during the year-end and New Year holidays.
That is to set goals and plans for the next year.
There are times when I feel like lazing away the winter vacation as a salaryman, but I make sure to spend time facing myself and setting goals.
How do I want to spend the next year?
Think about how you want the next year to be.
If you can answer immediately, you probably already have a clear vision of the direction you want to go in.
If your answer is something vague like, “Well, I guess I want to become rich,”
use this opportunity to take a hard look at yourself.
Biggest challenges should be considered over the long term
Make the year-ahead goal something like, “Earn money and quit my salaryman job.”
Don’t you think that sounds a bit abrupt?
If the goal is too big, it may be hard to realistically achieve, so you won’t be motivated to work toward it. A goal that feels vague or hollow is a sign the goal-setting is poor.
You need a more grounded goal.
So what should you do?
In such cases, try setting a five-year goal.
Five-Year Goal Setting
Five years from now, set the goal to earn 500,000 yen per month from sources other than salary income.
It could be forex automated trading, a side job leveraging your skills, YouTube, real estate investment, or anything else.
Decide what you will do, and increase your side income each year.
For example, if you have no income from a side job yet, how about this goal?
Year 1: 10,000 yen per month
Year 2: 30,000 yen per month
Year 3: 100,000 yen per month
Year 4: 250,000 yen per month
Year 5: 500,000 yen per month
First, in the first year alone, aim to earn 10,000 yen per month.
Doesn’t that feel achievable?
It may feel hard to suddenly earn 500,000 yen per month, but create a path to reach 500,000 yen and each year think about what you must do to reach it.
Envision achieving the five-year goal
If you have 500,000 yen per month from a side job, your life choices expand.
(Money can buy many life options, so the power of money is amazing.)
However, with just enough money, you may not need more. Do not become obsessed with money. I drifted a bit off topic.)
If you hate your salary job so much that you could quit right away, you may do so,
If you continue as a salaryman while also earning 500,000 yen from another source, that is already rich. It may be wise to continue as a salaryman a little longer to build your assets.
I’m currently enjoying my salaryman job to some extent, so I think I’ll continue as a salaryman given the present circumstances.
Rather than spending the side-income on entertainment or frivolous things, I want to put it into investments.
By gradually purchasing income-generating assets like rental real estate (not the mansion you live in) or dividend-paying stocks, your wealth base becomes more stable.
If you continue buying stocks that pay shareholder benefits, you can reduce your living costs.
If you buy dividend stocks with a solid financial base, you can reliably receive about 4% in dividends.
If living costs can be covered by your salary, saving side-income to buy real estate could be a good idea. Rent is almost guaranteed, making it very solid.
Write your goals in your planner
Setting realistic, achievable plans for your goals makes you feel you can reach them.
Then all that remains is to execute the plan.
If you keep living as you are, nothing will change... wouldn’t you like to break that stale routine?
Even if you greet the new year feeling refreshed, daily tasks can pull your focus away from your goals.
So what I would really like you to do is prepare your own planner and write your goals and plans in it.
Carry the planner with you every day and keep your life goals constantly in mind.
There are many ways to use a planner, but since discussing them could go on forever, I’ll leave that for another time.
If you think your current life will continue forever, that sounds boring—set your life goals!
And to truly realize them, break them down into plans, write them in your planner, and look at them every day.
That should change your life.
What are my goals for this year?
Mine is to update the Investment Navigator every month.
Well then, see you in next month’s article.
