With expectations of a slower pace of December rate hikes by the Fed already priced in and a completed cycle of rate declines, the rebound in gold prices has slowed. Last week, comments from Fed officials denying a slowdown in the pace of hikes provided fresh material to the market, and in the latter part of the week rates rose while gold drifted lower.

On the 18th, in New York's financial and bond markets, yields rose. The view that the Fed will continue raising rates underpins this. Concerns that monetary tightening could trigger a recession keep the yield curve deeply inverted. Several Fed officials this week continued to advocate the need to tighten further to curb high inflation. TD Securities’ interest-rate strategist Gennady Goldberg said, “The market overreacted to October's CPI, and Fed officials were working hard to push back through their statements.” On the 18th, Boston Fed President Collins said there is little evidence that price pressures are easing, so a 0.75% rate hike is still being considered. St. Louis Fed President Bullard also said on the 17th that even under a “lenient” analysis, the Fed would at least probably need to raise rates by a total of about 1% more. The minutes of the November FOMC meeting to be released on the 23rd could provide new clues about how much the Fed ultimately plans to raise rates.
