“Is the teaching of Makoto Matsushita easy to understand?” Featured in Toyo Keizai ONLINE column
Good morning, this is Matsushita.
The other day, on October 16, in Higashi Azabu, Minato-ku,
we held a live investment school,
and during the break, the students said,
"Professor Matsushita's teachings are incredibly easy to understand."
It was a highly gratifying compliment as a teacher.
It is a kind of praise I receive many times a year, dozens of times.
People who attended the live seminar or school, of course,
as well as those who watched videos on YouTube,
often give me this kind of feedback.
"The teachings of Makoto Matsushita are easy to understand."
There is a reason for this.
I seem to be good at explaining things to people.
In fact, my first experience working part-time was when
I was an 18-year-old prep school student, about to take the high school entrance exam,
and I worked as a math and English tutor for junior high school students.
At first, I was supposed to tutor only those two subjects,
but for some reason, college students didn’t apply for part-time jobs,
so I began teaching science and social studies as well.
In those bubble years, teenagers aged 14–15,
both boys and girls,
were demanding in their own ways,
and by March of the following year, they had all been accepted to their desired schools,
and they happily reported it to me,
which was my first experience of teaching people things.
Even after entering university,
I continued tutoring as a part-time job,
supporting two students through their entrance exams.
One of them was a high school student.
Because his family operated a livestock farm,
he had hoped to study veterinary medicine,
which was a great responsibility and a heavy burden, but
having gone through the experience of repeating a year and entering university myself,
I managed to teach without issue, and he entered the veterinary school of his choice.
At university, I majored in the Faculty of Pharmacy, and initially hoped to pursue a research career,
but instead joined a major pharmaceutical company as a sales representative,
and took part in a two-month training as a new employee.
On the final day of a training program that lasted more than two months,
in front of about 30 new employees like me,
the head of the academic department welcomed us and
conducted a presentation practice session.
For the first time in new-hire training, in front of dozens of peers and
the head-office academic supervisor,
presenting our own company's products,
everyone was tense and most could not explain well.
I suppose I am a bit insensitive in that respect,
but I explained what I had learned smoothly as is,
and after the training, I was called aside by the head-office academic supervisor,
praised, and my name and assignment location were checked.
That supervisor and I kept in touch and praised me for the next ten years of my career,
and I was treated kindly by him over and over.
During the following ten years,
I conducted explanations at hospital departments,
delivered product briefings at pharmacists associations,
and daily at dozens of morning assemblies at drug wholesalers,
and before I knew it, I had been explaining things in front of people continuously.
Even after I started investing,
I ended up teaching as well,
and I have met tens of thousands of investors,
and answered questions from tens of thousands of investors.
Because I am like that,
when people say,
I think,"I have taught many different people many different things."
And I am reminded of the junior high school students I taught first, who were 14–15 years old,
because they are now in their 40s,
and perhaps I could still teach them about investing now. (laugh)
It is true that my teachings are easy to understand,
and I believe that comes from having had these kinds of experiences.
