In the United States at the time, housing loans to non-prime borrowers (subprime) were based on rising housing prices; as prices fell, these loans became bad debts, and the credit guarantees on the financial products tied to them disappeared or dropped dramatically, leading to economic problems and the collapse or government management of many financial institutions, including housing loan agencies.

In simple terms, it was like repeating Japan's bubble burst in the United States.
