The 2021 domestic new car sales by model ranking was led for the first time by Toyota Motor Corporation's compact car "Yaris," which increased 40.3% year-on-year to 212,927 units. This marked Toyota’s first top spot since 2016's "Prius," and the wait of five years. Honda’s kei car "N-BOX," which had been first for four consecutive years through 2020, ranked second with 188,940 units. Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the National Light Motor Vehicle Association announced this on the 11th. The Yaris, released in February 2020, was counted in sales for the first time across the year in 2021. The compact SUV (multi-purpose vehicle) "Yaris Cross" led the increase in unit sales. Among the top 10 models, five were kei cars, including the second-ranked N-BOX.
