Recently, issues related to imports have been raised between the United Kingdom, which has recently left the EU, and Northern Ireland.
In the withdrawal agreement, there were various issues between Northern Ireland and the UK on the EU side, one of which was the inspection of imported goods. Due to unfamiliar procedures, progress has stalled and logistics have been disrupted, leading to shortages immediately after the withdrawal.
In particular, perishable goods whose freshness matters faced problems, and exporters stopped shipments to avoid unnecessary risks such as product spoilage, making these products conspicuously disappear from Northern Ireland’s supermarkets.
In response to this, the UK government decided to extend the grace period for several inspections that would expire at the end of this month until October.
Naturally, since this changes the terms of the withdrawal agreement, the EU has objected.
