A column published on Toyo Keizai ONLINE: From total darkness to the light of the sun
Good morning, this is Matsushita.
I have been investing for 16 years, but
the first two years were days of being stuck in a morass.
Every time I traded, losses widened,
I had no idea where I was,
where I was going,
and I was just floundering without knowing anything.
Even during those two years of mire,
there were losses that left a strong impression on me.
For a capital of 5 million yen, I blew 2 million in a single stop loss.
There were days when more than 1 million yen of a 3 million yen capital
was underwater, expanding day by day.
For a capital of 6 million yen, more than 3.6 million was underwater,
expanding day by day.
Every day I felt sick, unable to sleep, and with a lag in time
I remember watching the price in the Chicago futures market night after night,
and being tormented.
It was literally days of utter darkness.
From a daily pattern where losses like this kept expanding,
I miraculously recovered.
I think I had some skill, but
more than anything, I was lucky.
Normally, if you take on such losses through money management at that time,
you would not survive.
I was taking excessive, outrageous risks.
From this experience, I learned the importance of money management firsthand,
made my investment approach stricter, and started teaching others about investing
so that I could share this with them.
Since then I still incur losses, but
the kind of hopeless, unseeable dark days
do not return.
From then on, my investments have been
much clearer,
always bright and sunny.
If you experience something like this,
you will inevitably understand the importance of money management.
Because I have experienced it firsthand,
all investors and traders who have succeeded
consistently say with one voice,
“The most important thing in investing is money management.”
I tell you this with confidence.
This is exactly what pulled me out of the utter darkness
and guided me to the bright light of day
and the sun.
Money management will save your investments.
Seek and find your own money management.
