U.S. corporate debt exceeds crisis-era levels as a percentage of GDP. Triggered by the novel coronavirus, it appears that the aggressive rate cuts are aimed at preventing defaults.
Since markets were churned by the coronavirus in February 2020, corporate cash raising (via the repo market) has increased. The same phenomenon occurred the month after the market turmoil in August 2019. As concerns about earnings deterioration rise, corporate cash demand seems to be increasing for debt service.
U.S. companies still have the ability to service debt. However, even a 5% year-over-year decline in profits due to the coronavirus would bring debt-servicing capability down to crisis-era levels.
