Will Chinese companies resume sales and operations!? “February 10 spotlight and event schedule”
Although things are settling down this week as well, attention seems likely to be drawn to the novel coronavirus.
What’s getting more attention is not the number of infections but the widening impact on the economy.
The market ended last weekend with a slight risk-off tilt, and this morning the yen is starting strong.
Also, the pound has fallen sharply.
Concerns that talks with the EU on a free trade agreement will be difficult have created a situation where the pound is easily sold.
Both the UK and the EU are in leadership struggles, and various remarks have been issued.
For the time being, the pound is likely to fluctuate day by day with comments.
◎ Today’s Points of Attention
1) Novel Coronavirus
The market seems to have priced in to some extent, but if events occur that have effects on the economy beyond what is currently known, risk-off may come again.
What I’m watching today is whether companies that postponed reopening their operations after the Lunar New Year will resume.
Many companies were planning to resume from the 10th today, but I want to monitor whether they truly reopen, how long postponements last if they delay again, and how many companies will delay again, and assess the impact on the stock market.
2) Statements by Key Figures
Speeches by FOMC members are scheduled for today.
Attention is on the remarks from voting-eligible Bowman of the FRB and Patrick Harker, President of the Philadelphia Fed.
Chair Powell has signaled holding rates this year, but the market is watching for a potential one-rate cut this year.
We are watching what content the two voting participants will express.
