【Fujitomi】Nikkei average falls back as dollar/yen struggles above and BoJ ETF buying fails to materialize
The Nikkei stock average fell, closing at 19,063.22 yen, down 154.26 yen (0.80%) from the previous day. Selling dominated as Shanghai stocks declined, the dollar/yen pair faced upper pressure, and expectations for BOJ ETF purchases waned. A vague unease about the future of the Trump administration loomed, and the yen strengthened, putting a lid on the market’s upside. Reports that President Trump rejected the ceremonial first pitch of Major League Baseball on April 3 (Nationals vs. Marlins) became a topic of discussion among foreign investors, triggering speculation. By dismissing the traditional first pitch with a history of over 100 years, it sparked a controversy, and concerns rose again that various issues would arise within the Republican Party due to the postponement of the Obamacare replacement bill.
TOPIX continued to fall, ending at 1,527.59, down 14.48 points (0.94%). The turnover on the Tokyo Stock Exchange First Section was 2 trillion 60.5 billion yen, and the trading volume was 1,849.41 million shares. The number of declining issues on the First Section was 1,572, rising 338, and unchanged 100.
