[Next week's USD/JPY] The employment report is 2.5 times the forecast! Still, here are reasons why I can't easily predict a breakout above 159 yen
Employment statistics significantly beat expectations! So will USD/JPY break through 159 next week?
But FX isn’t that simple.
From Monday, November 9, 2026, USD/JPY looks set to have a week where hopes for a rise clash with vigilance against a sharp fall.
? Employment data exceeds expectations!
The numbers from the U.S. employment report released on November 6 show:
Nonfarm payrolls: expected +65,000 → actual +165,000
Unemployment rate: expected 4.2% → actual 4.1%
Average hourly earnings: expected +0.3% → actual +0.4%
Payrolls were about 2.5 times the forecast.
However, these figures have not yet been cross-checked with primary sources at the time of writing, so they should not be treated as final.
? Why can’t we be reassured even with strong employment data?
When the U.S. economy is strong, expectations rise that interest rates will stay high, which tends to support the dollar.
But this time there is another concern.
That isthe fall in AI-related stocks.
Investors are cautious about whether massive investments in AI will translate into profits.
If market anxiety spreads, the yen could be bought and USD/JPY could fall.
? Three geniuses debate!
?A: Ultra-optimistic
“If the employment data was strong, next week could see continued dollar buying! I want to see a breakout to 159!”
?B: Ultra-careful
“Good news may already be priced in. There’s a possibility of a reversal near 159!”
?C: A different perspective
“What matters isn’t just the employment numbers. If you look at next week’s U.S. interest rates and stock prices, you might see the true strength of USD/JPY.”
? My view
I basically aim for a long USD/JPY.
So strong employment data is a material to watch.
But I won’t buy just because it seems to go higher.
There were times I entered in a hurry and cut losses, only for the market to rebound afterward.
From that experience I learned that
“What you think will rise” and “the timing to buy” are separate things.
I plan to wait until my own buy signal appears next week as well.
✅ Conclusion
There is a possibility USD/JPY could break through 159 next week.
On the other hand, a stock market decline or a drop in U.S. interest rates could cause the yen to strengthen again.
Just because employment data was good doesn’t mean you should buy; you should buy when there are solid reasons for upside.
Even if you miss a chance, there will be another if you have capital left.
Don’t rush, survive.
That’s my FX approach.
Do you think USD/JPY will break through 159 next week? Or do you think it will retreat?
