Whisker break and real body break, which should you trust? Reducing deception with the concept of “closing price break”
“I thought I had broken through!” only to be pulled back, that pattern
When the price briefly surpassed the recent high with the candle wick, you jump in thinking “it’s a breakout,” but the price returns to its original range. Have you ever experienced this in FX or gold trading?
In this article, we organize the difference between breaks of highs/lows judged by wick versus break judged by body (close). The goal is to give readers who struggle with false breakouts a single criterion they can rely on starting tomorrow.
Difference between Wick Breakouts and Body Breakouts
Wick breakout is “a breakout as soon as the price goes beyond it even for an instant,” while body breakout is “a breakout only if the close at the end of the candle exceeds it.”
For example, on a 1-hour chart, you can judge a wick breakout in the middle of the candle. A body breakout is judged only when the current hour closes higher than the high after the hour ends.
Why Wick Breakouts Are Prone to False Signals
Wicks indicate “the price went that far once, but was pushed back.” A candle that ends with only a wick above the high suggests there were sellers waiting above.
There are mainly three reasons why false signals occur:
- Just beyond the most recent high/low, stop orders and new limit orders tend to accumulate. When price touches there, orders execute in one swoop and the wick extends.
- After orders are cleared, momentum often fades and price tends to revert to the original range.
- During news releases or thin liquidity times, temporary moves can extend the wick even if it’s only a brief move.
In short, wick breakouts are often mixed with cases where the price only touched briefly and did not truly break.
Benefits and Weaknesses of Judging by Body Breakouts
Body breakouts are a judgment of whether the participants in that timeframe ended the candle outside the high. It’s not a momentary move but a confirmed fact.
Benefits
- Avoid counting temporary wick-based pullbacks as breakouts.
- Since the criterion is just “did the close exceed,” it’s less confusing.
- When backtesting later, the standard remains stable and easy to record.
Weaknesses
- Waiting for candle closure delays entries. In strong-trend markets, the price may move significantly by the time it closes.
- False signals can still occur even after a body breakout.
A body breakout is a filter to reduce false signals, not a magic to eliminate them entirely. Keep that in mind.
How Close Break Looks
This idea of “draw highs/lows at wick tips and judge breakout by close” became an indicator for MT4/MT5 called Close Break.
- High/low lines drawn at wick tipsDetects swing highs/lows in the same way as ZigZag and draws lines at the wick tips’ prices.
- Break judged by closeOnly when a candle closes beyond the line is a “Break” displayed.
- During formation, status is “Pending (unclear)”If the candle is in progress and beyond the line, it is not treated as confirmed; you can clearly see it’s pending.
- Trend status panelShows whether the trend is up, down, or a range based on the sequence of Breaks.
- Break alertsReceive confirmed Breaks via PC alerts or smartphone notifications (Off at startup).
Notes for Use
Breaks should be used as a signal of a change in market state, not as a direct entry cue.
- Don’t jump in right after a BreakEven after a body breakout, price often retraces a bit before continuing. Waiting for the retrace can help reduce stop loss sizes.
- Also watch the higher timeframe directionWhether the lower timeframe Break aligns with the higher timeframe trend changes the meaning. Using the higher timeframe ZigZag display lets you confirm on the same chart.
- Timeframe changes the timing of judgmentOn a 5-minute chart, confirmations occur every 5 minutes; on a daily chart, every day. Use a timeframe that fits your trading style.
- Always set a stop lossNo method of judgment can fully avoid false signals.
Conclusion
If you’re unsure about a breakout, keep one criterion: watch the highs/lows at wick tips and judge breakout by the close. This makes your decisions less inconsistent.
- Wick breakouts are fast but more prone to false signals that touched briefly.
- Body breakouts are a bit slower by one candle, but decisions are based on confirmed facts.
- Since body breakouts cannot eliminate false signals entirely, combine waiting for a retrace with a stop loss.
This criterion is automatically displayed on charts by Close Break. There are MT4 and MT5 versions, with a user manual (PDF) included.

Next time, we will introduce a concept for finding opportunities from the discrepancy between Breaks on higher and lower timeframes and present the EA “Close Break Pro” based on that concept.
