[Development Log] How to Choose a Ranking Check Tool — Criteria Learned from Considering and Trying 6 Tools to Get Google Rankings
【Key Points】
- The lab tracks search rankings to understand the entry points to LPs. Traditional GRC only captured Yahoo rankings, and could not fetch Google's ranking.
- In addition to GRC, explored and tested Nobilista, Ranktracker, SEO PowerSuite's Rank Tracker, BULL, Rekam, and Gyro-n SEO.
- Selection criteria were organized into six points: Google compatibility, scope of acquisition, pricing model, number of keywords, lightness of operation, and regional/device targeting.
■ 1. Background: Why track rankings
To increase entry points to LPs, it is necessary to continuously understand how they appear in search results.
Until now, we were tracking Yahoo rankings with GRC.
However, GRC could only obtain Yahoo rankings; Google rankings could not be retrieved.
In reality, when manually searching Google, LPs could appear on the first or second page even for keywords outside Yahoo's result area.
If you only look at Yahoo results, you may underestimate the actual situation. Therefore, we decided to search for another tool that could obtain Google's rankings. We canceled GRC on October 27.
■ 2. Tools considered and tried
The table summarizes the tools considered and tested, based on results in my environment.
It is not about the superiority of tools, but results against certain conditions (Google ranking, retrieval up to around 30, monthly budget within 2,000 yen).
■ 3. Selection criteria (6 points)
Through trials, the following six became the judgment axes.
Can Google rankings be retrieved?
Since Google traffic can be central to search, retrieval limited to Yahoo was insufficient.
What is the retrieval range (up to which rank)?
To assess entry points, retrieving only up to 10th rank is not enough; we want up to around 30th.
In fact, Nobilista retrieves up to 10th rank, which did not meet this requirement.
Pricing model: monthly vs. annual upfront
Budget is set to within 2,000 yen per month.
Services that only offer annual contracts did not meet this condition. The paid version of SEO PowerSuite is annual upfront, and BULL offers a 2-week free trial but also requires annual contracts, so both were passed.
Keyword count and the multiplication of region and device
The number of keywords that can be registered depends not only on the tool's limit but also on the designated region and device, effectively changing the consumed count.
With Rekam, if both PC and smartphone are retrieved, it counts as one per device.
Trying to retrieve 28 keywords on both PC and smartphone would double the count and exceed the free plan limit.
Therefore, we first manually registered 10 words to test.
Ease of operation
Installed tools require considering the load on the device. In the free version of SEO PowerSuite's Rank Tracker, retrieving 28 keywords resulted in only one keyword being verifiable per hour, implying over five hours to complete the plan. The fact that two search engines were specified may have influenced this, but the exact cause couldn't be identified. Due to repeated startup errors and retrieval stoppages, we stopped using it.
Whether saving and automatic retrieval are possible
In the free version, saving results and automatic retrieval may not be available. Ranks are meaningful only when viewed as trends over time, not as a single retrieval value. Without history, there is insufficient material to analyze fluctuations.
■ 4. Cautions when observing rankings
Rankings vary by region, device, and search history.
We decided to specify region as Shiga Prefecture, Otsu City, and devices as PC and smartphone when retrieving with tools.
Manual search results and tool retrieval values may not perfectly match.
Also, retrieval values may not match across tools.
In fact, Rank Tracker showed “Semura Lab” as 1st and “Logic Verification EA” as 2nd, suggesting good accuracy.
However, it is premature to decide based on the value retrieved by a single tool once.
We need to retrieve multiple times under multiple conditions to observe trends.
■ 5. Narrowing down keywords
There were 104 keywords brought from GRC.
When entered into Rank Tracker, retrieval did not finish, so we narrowed to 28 keywords.
Gyro-n SEO currently supports up to 10 keywords.
Possible narrowing criteria include the following:
- Words close to the brand name (lab name, etc.)
- Words for which actual search volumes could be confirmed via Keyword Planner
- Words that function as entry points to pages like a glossary
In terms of actual volume, “fx ea not winning” ranges from 100 to 1,000 monthly. “MT4 backtest how-to” also falls in the 100–1,000 range. Such terms are prioritized for allocation.
■ 6. Current status and future
Currently using Gyro-n SEO Starter Plan (3 months free, 10 keywords).
Site registration name is Semura_Lab.
Free period will end if plan or options are changed, so changes are not made.
Rekam is awaiting a response from the operator and is being kept on hold in parallel.
Going forward, we will accumulate ranking trends during the free period.
Then, we will decide whether to move to paid plans by comparing with the budget (within 2,000 yen per month).
We, Semura Lab., will formalize and document the criteria for tool selection as a record.
