When you change your environment, you change yourself
Series 9|Change your life with trading #11
When you change your environment, you change yourself
Hello, this is THE DAYTRADE.
No matter how many times you decide to “follow the rules,” you end up breaking them. Even when you intend to trade more calmly, before you know it you’re driven by emotions.
In such times, many people think, “It’s because my willpower is weak.”
But I think differently.Changing your environment is faster than changing your will. This time, I’ll write about three environments that can change your trading self.
1. Why environment over will
A person’s will isn’t that strong. On tiring days, days of consecutive losses, days when you’re irritated. On such days, it’s hard to keep to rules by willpower alone.
On the other hand, the environment exerts a constant influence every day.
If you’re in an environment where you’re more likely to break the rules, you’ll break them no matter how hard you try. If you’re in an environment where it’s easier to keep the rules, it’s easier to keep them even without putting in extra effort.
In #3 I wrote “habits are sustained not by will but by systems,” and the environment is the foundation of that system.
2. ① Change your chart environment
First, review the charts you look at every day.
- Are you displaying multiple indicators?
- Are you drawing many horizontal lines and losing track of which ones matter?
- Are you looking at inconsistent timeframes from day to day?
More information on a chart means more things you could get confused by. I don’t use indicators; I keep one horizontal line per timeframe. I view in the order 4H → 1H → 5M. That’s all.
Simplifying the chart makes what you should look at clear, and reduces judgment wobble.
3. ② Change your time and information environment
Next is the time you trade and the information you receive.
- Decide when to trade:If you have the chart open all day, you’ll want to enter even when there isn’t a good opportunity
- Reduce notifications:If every price movement notification pops up, your mood gets swayed by the market
- Narrow your sources:Seeing others’ forecasts and methods on social media makes your own judgment waver
Don’t look at things you don’t need to. Just this will calm your trading considerably.
4. ③ Change your people environment
And the biggest influence comes fromthe people around you.
If you’re in a place where everyone talks about making money in one shot, you’ll want to aim for a big gain yourself. Conversely, if you’re among people who follow the rules and trade steadily, that becomes natural for you, too.
In #6 I wrote, “People who can continue have a place to listen,” and in #8, “It’s enough to have a few who understand you.” Both are about people’s environment.
Who you study with changes your own standards.
5. What to do today
Among the three environments, change one thing immediately todayand try it.
- Remove one indicator from your chart
- Turn off one price-move notification
- Organize one SNS account you follow
Small changes are fine. When one environment changes, your next day’s trading will change a little.
Summary
You don’t need to rely on willpower alone to change yourself.
Simplify the chart. Narrow time and information. Choose who you study with. Change your environment, and you’ll naturally change.
Pursue correctness over winning rate. Create an environment where you can be correct on your own.
