GOLD's 5-minute chart is rising, the 1-hour chart is falling. Which should you trust? Practice to distinguish the roles of time frames
GOLD Price Movement Analysis | Practical Learning Series
In the 5-minute chart, the high is being updated, but when you open the 1-hour chart you see a decline in progress. If you pass on buying and it goes up, if you buy it then it retraces. Have you ever wondered which timeframe is correct?
Both can be correct at the same time. Even during a major decline, small advances can occur. This time, we will organize price movement positions on the 1-hour chart and decide the conditions to confirm on the 5-minute chart. It does not mean that you will win just by aligning the directions.
First, compare two charts at the same time
In MT5 you can switch timeframes or place multiple charts of the same instrument side by side. A timeframe is the duration each candlestick represents. When comparing, align the instrument, data source, and the confirmation time.
For example, at 10:25, the 1-hour chart starting at 10:00 is still in progress. Do not mix the shape formed up to 11:00 with the judgment at 10:25. Also record the standard time displayed on the charts.
Practice: A small new high may indicate the end of a large decline
We use fictitious GOLD prices. Unit is dollars per ounce. On the 1-hour chart, the highs are 3,020 → 3,012 and the lows are 3,000 → 2,994. In the middle, the 5-minute chart moves 2,996 → 3,002 → 2,999 → 3,005.
We can confirm that the latest high on the 5-minute chart of 3,002 has been exceeded. But at this point, can we say the 1-hour retracement high of 3,012 is also exceeded? The answer is "no." We separate small rebounds from large structural changes in words.
Do not make the three scenarios the same buy decision
| Scenario | What can be confirmed | What is still unknown |
|---|---|---|
| A: 3,005, below 3,012 | Updated the 5-minute high | Can it exceed the 1-hour retracement high? |
| B: Temporarily breakthrough 3,012 | Passed through that price | Whether it meets the pre-determined confirming candle condition |
| C: After the breakthrough, returns below 3,012 again | Failed to sustain the breakout price | Whether it rises again or the decline continues |
This is not a classification of “buy if B, sell if C.” It is a comparison to decide, before seeing the results, which states you will target with your method.
Place conditions to cancel hypotheses before entry
As a practice proposal, if you observe a rebound on the 5-minute chart, write down “which pullback low and at what price basis would invalidate the rebound hypothesis.” Also note whether to cancel by the wick crossing or by the 5-minute bar close as separate conditions.
On the other hand, if your plan is to wait until the 1-hour downtrend structure changes, define in advance the confirming candle targeting 3,012 and the judgment time. If you interchange these two plans mid-way to fit convenience, you cannot review the same method properly.
The observation rule of waiting for a close and the actual stop-loss order you place are not the same. Do not treat waiting for a close as unlimited loss tolerance.
Consider upside potential from the execution price
If you set a buy order at 3,005, a hypothetical stop at 3,001, and a take-profit at 3,011, the price spread is a risk of 4 dollars and a profit of 6 dollars, a pre-cost ratio of 1 to 1.5. From this calculation, you cannot know the probability of reaching 3,011 or whether the order is guaranteed to fill.
If the higher timeframe 3,012 is nearby, plans may change whether you close the position before reaching it or target a breakout. Before concluding with “the higher timeframe is bearish, so prohibited,” clearly define your target range.
Example entry: divide conditions until you can explain them in one sentence
Example Entry: 10:25 / H1 is making lower highs and lower lows / M5 breaks 3,002 / H1's 3,012 not yet broken / candidate for short-term rebound / trading conditions not yet determined.
Your own recording column: Confirmation date/time basis [ ] / Confirmed H1 high/low [ ] / Confirmed M5 changes [ ] / Candlestick under observation [ ] / Conditions for establishment [ ] / Conditions for invalidation [ ] / Orders, stop-loss, quantity [ ]。
Increasing the number of timeframes does not necessarily improve judgments. First, fix the roles of each timeframe and the facts visible at the decision point, and create a state where you can later compare under the same conditions.
Confirm GOLD trading candidates and settlement targets on the same chart
After viewing multiple timeframes, CALDO helps you confirm GOLD buy/sell candidates and settlement targets on one screen.
CALDO is a tool I developed and sell that helps you verify GOLD buy/sell candidates and settlement targets on a chart. It does not directly explain the article’s unique practice conditions or calculation sheets as CALDO's judgment logic.
