Chapter 5 [Part I]: The Emergence of Many Ripples — The Incubation of Independent Multilayer Logic
I. The park pond and overlapping ripples
2023, Spring.
After the busy weekdays as a salesperson, on Sunday I took the children to a large neighborhood park.
A gentle breeze blew pleasantly, and the green trees reflected vividly on the surface of the pond.
“Dad, watch this! I’ll do a water skip!”
My son threw a flat stone he found with a sidearm throw.
Plop, plop, plop.
Each time the stone bounced on the water, concentric circles spread out, intersecting with one another.
Next, my daughter tossed another stone somewhere else, and together with the ripple from the stone I had thrown at my feet, several ripples of different sizes and speeds overlapped on the surface of the pond.
Staring at the ripples on the water, a lightning-like realization flashed through my mind.
(…This is it. Isn’t the stock market wave exactly like this)
In the vast pool of the market, there are short-term little waves like noise, intraday mid-waves lasting a few hours, and long waves of trends that surge for days to weeks, all occurring simultaneously and asynchronously.
Traditional EAs fail because they try to catch all these waves with a single frame (a single logic).
“If the size and nature of the waves differ, run multiple independent engines specialized for each cross-section, and layer them asynchronously like a pond’s surface.”
On the pond’s edge where the children laughed, the blueprint for the asynchronous multi-layer cover structure that forms the core of “Golden Wheat Reaper” clearly surfaced in my mind.
II. Five-layer defense approach — Independent engines that capture different waves —
That night, I sat at my desk and began translating the idea I had seen earlier into code.
What’s needed to survive the market’s all-weather is multiple independent approaches that do not interfere with each other and calmly harvest only what each is good at.
I organized my multi-angled concept into five defense layers.
【GWR Layered Defense Engine’s Multi-Angle Approach Concept】
・Layer 1 (Range Oscillator):
Capture short-term overheated moments and accumulate profits with nimble exit in range markets.
・Layer 2 (Trend, Large Wave Momentum):
Lodge with the slope of long-term moving averages, ride the wave without opposing the overall flow.
・Layer 3 (Breakout):
Seize the moment when price breaks through resistance and momentum forms, utilizing the instantaneous push.
・Layer 4 (Cycle, Volatility Convergence):
Cycle judgment to capture energy dispersion after the market has quieted to an extreme.
・Layer 5 (Time-of-Day Anomaly):
Small scalping to capture market distortions occurring around market open for specific markets.
“If one logic doesn’t fit the market environment and gets caught, another logic will profit and cover it. As long as all engines aren’t simultaneously out of commission, the whole ship won’t sink.”
This was the structural, complete answer to my past self who had repeatedly tried and blown up chasing a single holy grail.
III. An unexpected trap — The fear of clustered positions and the snowball —
However, the moment I built the program and ran the first backtest, I witnessed a scene that sent a chill down my spine.
“……What is this?! Too many positions piling up at the same price!”
On the screen, multiple engines detected entry signals at almost the same timing, and within a narrow price band of just a few pips, several positions were densely accumulated all at once.
【Fear of Position Clustering】
・At around 0.9000, several engines entered judgment simultaneously.
・Within just 3.0 pips, four or five positions became concentrated.
・When the market moved against them, all positions turned unrealized losses at once,
and the margin maintenance rate plummeted.
“I thought diversification would spread the risk, but piling positions in the same place is just high-leverage averaging down…”
Staring at the screen, I broke into a cold sweat.
No matter how excellent each engine is, without a central safety mechanism to supervise them, the entire multi-layer structure could become a trigger for ruin.
There was a need for defense measures to keep positions from eating each other and to maintain a safe distance amid the market’s rough seas.
The challenge toward another breakthrough that would determine the safety of an unsinkable ship had begun.
