What should be done when the directions of the upper leg and lower leg disagree?
Despite the daily chart rising, the hourly chart is falling. Conversely, the hourly chart may be clearly rising, while the daily chart shows a decline. When viewing the market in multiple timeframes, you frequently encounter these “contradictions.”
There are moments when you wonder which to trust, but contradictions are not rare. This time, we整理(organize)how to handle them.
Why do contradictions occur
Even within the higher timeframe trend, you may see movements in the lower timeframe in the opposite direction. A pullback within an uptrend (a temporary drop) can appear as a decline on the lower timeframe.
In other words, a contradiction does not mean that one of them is wrong; it simply means you are looking at different lengths of time.
Main patterns of contradictions
1. Temporary counter-movement within the higher timeframe trend
The daily chart is rising, the hourly chart is falling. This could be a pullback. The idea is to wait for the lower timeframe’s decline to stop and for it to move in the same direction as the higher timeframe.
2. The higher timeframe trend is starting to change
The daily rise is losing momentum, and the lower timeframe declines are increasing. This can be a precursor to a trend change.
3. The higher timeframe is unclear
The higher timeframe is in a range and the direction is not clear. It is easy to be swayed by the movements on the lower timeframe.
In many cases, you cannot tell which pattern it is on the spot.
Options when they disagree
The following are examples of整理方法 (organization methods), and do not recommend any specific action. Which rules you adopt should be decided in advance to match your own method.
- Pass on (skip): Wait until the directions align. The simplest approach and reduces hesitation.
- Enter only based on the higher timeframe direction: Enter after confirming the lower timeframe has started moving back toward the higher timeframe direction.
- Reduce position size: If entering, do so with a smaller size than usual.
- Shorten the profit target: If you are aiming only at the lower timeframe movement, set a smaller profit target.
Deciding in advance which option to take as a rule when contradictions arise makes it less likely to hesitate at the moment.
Points to note
Even if the directions align, it does not guarantee success. Direction confirmation is just one piece of the decision material. It is important to determine stop-loss placement and position size as you normally would.
Check by placing two timeframes side by side
To notice contradictions, you need to check the directions of the higher and lower timeframes each time. If you switch charts to check, you are prone to missing things due to the extra effort.
In Yen Trend Compass, the direction of the currently viewed timeframe and the daily timeframe are judged by their relative position to a 200-period moving average and displayed side by side in one panel. It is not about deciding which to prioritize, but about quickly confirming whether they are aligned now.
