MT5 alerts and mobile notifications, basic setup methods
"Let me know when this price is reached." Have you ever kept an eye on the chart for that reason? MT5 has an "Alert" feature that notifies you under certain conditions like price, and a "Push notification" feature that delivers that alert to your smartphone.
This time, as a general MT5 feature, we will introduce the basic settings for alerts and smartphone notifications.
Setting an Alert
Alerts are configured from the Toolbox's "Alerts" tab.
- Open the Toolbox (the window at the bottom of the screen) and select the "Alerts" tab
- Right-click and choose "Create"
- Enter the currency pair, conditions (e.g., Bid is above 〇〇), and the value
- Choose the method of notification (the action)
Actions include sounding an alert, sending an email, notifying on a smartphone, and so on.
Smartphone Notification (Push Notification) Settings
To deliver notifications to your smartphone, you need to connect your desktop MT5 with the MT5 app on your phone.
On the smartphone side
- Install the MT5 app
- From the app settings, check the "MetaQuotes ID" (alphanumeric ID)
On the PC side
- Open the "Options" from the "Tools" menu
- In the "Notifications" tab, enable push notifications
- Enter the MetaQuotes ID you confirmed on your smartphone
- Use the "Test" button to verify it reaches your phone
With this setup, if you set the alert's action to "Notification," you will receive it on your smartphone when the conditions are met.
Note: The names and locations of menus may vary slightly depending on MT5 version and language settings.
Tips to Avoid Excessive Notifications
If you increase notifications just because they’re convenient, your smartphone may ring constantly, causing you to miss important alerts.
- Only notify for conditions that truly lead to action
- Adjust the setup so the same price vicinity doesn’t trigger alerts repeatedly
- Delete alerts after you’ve finished using them
Notes
- Your PC MT5 must be running: Alerts and push notifications are sent when the PC MT5 is running and connected to the internet. If the PC is powered off, they will not arrive
- Notifications may be delayed or may not arrive: This depends on your smartphone and network conditions. Do not rely on notifications alone; also place stop-loss orders as a precaution
- Indicator or EA notifications depend on their individual specifications: Whether MT5's notification feature can be used and whether a particular indicator or EA supports smartphone notifications and actually reaches you is a separate matter. For individual tools, refer to their manuals and verification scope
Start with a Test Notification
First, begin by using the "Test" button in the Options screen to check whether a notification reaches your smartphone. Once you confirm it arrives, you only need to set the conditions thereafter.
