What is a Channel Line? How to draw it, its nature and meaning ~Channel Line Part 1~ 【Line Analysis Basic Course #7】
Hello! This is SAKU!
Up to previous postsArticles about Trendlines I have written, but this time I plan to write about line analysis as well!
This time, let's look at a type of line that can be used in conjunction with trendlines,Channel linesand explore them!
Please read while keeping in mind the differences in properties compared with trendlines!
What is a Channel Line?
A channel lineis a line that can be drawn parallel to the trendline.
I think it will be easier to understand when you see it in a diagram.
In an uptrend, the lower boundary (lows) is the trendline, and the upper boundary is the Channel Line,In a downtrend, the upper boundary (highs) is the trendline, and the lower boundary is the Channel Line.
A convenient way to remember is that the trendline is on the right side and the channel line on the left side.
By the way, the space between the trendline and the channel line where price moves is often called the channel itself or channel width.
In other words, it is the price movement range defined by the trendline and the channel line.
As an image, if the channel defining overall direction and width is like a water pipe, the price moves inside it like a flow of water. It’s like water meandering through the pipe.
Properties of Channel Lines
Oftenpeople confuse trendlines with channel lines, and this is dangerous.
Becausetrendlines and channel lines have similar but different characteristics and roles!
So, what properties do channel lines have?Channel lines are basically lines indicating profit targets.
While trendlines indicate where new positions might actively enter (buy on dips, sell on rallies, etc.),,channel lines primarily indicate profit targets.
They can also serve as resistance or support, but their role is not as strong as that of trendlines due to their nature.
In other wordsit can be dangerous to enter a new position just because the price is near a channel line, just as with a trendline
How to Draw Channel Lines
Drawing them is simple: you move the trendline parallel to either the highs or the lows.
If you are using MT4 or MT5, you can draw a channel line by holding the Ctrl key and double-clicking the trendline, then drag it parallel to the highs or lows. (There is also a function to draw the channel in one go, but I don’t particularly like it.)
One important note is to ensure that the price movement waves fit neatly inside the trendline and the channel line.Do not create partial breakouts (unless there is a specific intention).
That said, you can ignore excessively long wicks or bodies of candlesticks if needed.
This part becomes intuitive with practice and familiarity.
Once you have a decent grasp of drawing trendlines, draw channel lines together as a set.
That’s all for now; next time I’d like to write about how to actually apply channel lines to trading!
In this article, the most important thing is the nature of channel lines.
If you mix up these properties and read haphazardly, you won’t graduate from being a pretend line trader, so understand it properly!
I’ve said this many times in previous articles: lines alone are meaningless!
Be mindful of what the line is and what you draw it for, and keep practicing drawing with that awareness. If this article helped you, please give it a like or a heart—much appreciated!
