Nike, Inc., which continues to dominate as the world's leading sports brand. Opening its latest annual report, the 2026 Form 10-K, reveals in granular detail the historic business and financial turning points the company is currently facing.
The Form 10-K's page 27 features the "PERFORMANCE GRAPH (Stock Price Performance Comparison Graph)." Here, the cumulative total return if dividends had been reinvested over the past five years is shown. Nike's stock price reached historic highs during the peak of pandemic-driven demand at home, the sneaker boom, and the Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) shift. Since then, with market expansion slowing, friction with wholesale partners as the directorship shift accelerated, and the Chinese market faltering, it has significantly underperformed the S&P 500 index.
However, what truly deserves attention is not the stock price itself, but what kind of "surgical" actions management has performed in the financial statements (B/S and C/F) behind it.
The most striking anomaly in the FY26 financial statements is that the company abruptly slowed its long-standing practice of massive "share repurchases." The program, which once allocated over $4 billion annually, has shrunk to only $12.3 million this year (a roughly 93% decrease from the previous year).
Why would the champion stop buybacks that the market would typically welcome to such an extent? We will read the reasons from the consolidated cash flow statement (page 60) and disclosures (Item 5).
