This week is Central Bank Week. Major central banks in Japan and the United States have begun considering rate hikes. The Fed's September 15–16 and the Bank of Japan's September 17–18 meetings. At present, the market prices in roughly an 85% probability of a 0.25% rate hike by the Fed and around a 75% probability of a 0.25% rate hike by the BOJ. This will be the Fed's SEP (Summary of Economic Projections) release as well. Both Japan and the U.S. may see further rate hikes within the year, but this has not yet been priced in. Gold, which is sensitive to rate hikes, rose on the August CPI release showing a year-over-year increase of 3.4%, with the month-over-month speed of price gains accelerating to 0.4% from July's 0.1%, and the core index also showing the largest month-over-month rise in four months, fueling strong expectations that the Fed will raise rates at this week's meeting. The spot market and gold prices peaked at 4,696 dollars on August 25, then corrected by more than 400 dollars by September 2, hitting a low of 4,282 dollars.
