Episode 19: "The First Suspect"
ACE Gold EA Ver.1 -GENESIS-
Based on the completed ACE,
the research for Ver.2 has begun.
But,
we didn’t add new features all at once.
The first thing we did was,
to question what exists right now.
Are we strong because we are protecting?
ACE has
several defenses.
Avoid dangerous situations.
Don’t enter too many times in succession.
If conditions are bad, pass.
If losses increase, stop.
Each one has a proper reason for being made.
That’s why it remains up to GENESIS.
But,
at this point,
we decided to think from a reverse direction.
Are all of them really necessary?
Defenses always come with a cost
If you add one defense,
it might reduce bad entries
in trading.
But at the same time,
it may also stop entries that would have been profitable.
This was something I repeatedly experienced while building Ver.1.
The more we defend,
the safer it may seem.
However,
over-defending
erases the big wins that define ACE.
So in Ver.2,
not, “Because this defense exists, I am safe,”
but,
“Does this defense truly protect the profits?”
we decided to examine once more.
Remove just one
The task is simple.
Leave GENESIS as is.
And from the copied ACE,
remove only one condition.
Do not change anything else.
Backtest.
Compare with GENESIS.
What happened to profits?
What happened to losses?
How did the number of trades change?
Did big wins disappear?
Did big losses increase?
What’s important here is
not changing two things at once.
Even if two changes improve the numbers,
you won’t know which was effective
until you test them separately.
So,
remove one.
compare.
restore to original.
remove the next one.
compare again.
It’s subtle, but
this process was repeated.
“More does not always mean better”
While developing,
once a feature is added,
you begin to grow attached.
It was hard-won.
There is a solid reason for it.
Therefore,
we want to retain it.
But,
what ACE needs is not the developer’s sentimentality.
What is required is,
the result.
If,
removing it makes ACE stronger,
that feature
is no longer needed.
Conversely,
if removing it immediately weakens ACE,
that is the real defense supporting GENESIS.
From here, ACE’s health check began
Entrance.
Filter.
Defense.
Position limits.
Exit.
Disassemble each one and
compare with GENESIS.
Ver.2’s first task was not
to create new weapons, but
to verify whether the equipment currently possessed is really necessary
and
then,
from the first comparison,
the contents of ACE gradually
began to reveal themselves.
