undefined undefinedGood morning, this is Lonchi FX. This is the morning edition for Wednesday, September 9.
Yesterday, 9/8, was truly a day of turmoil. The revised GDP for Q2 released at 8:50 showed quarter-on-quarter +0.4% and annualized +1.4%, revised up from the flash figures (annualized +1.1%), but it fell short of market expectations of +1.6% annualized, which was seen as a disappointment. On the other hand, July real wages rose 2.4% year over year, the highest since May 2021, and the market is virtually pricing in a rate hike at the Bank of Japan meeting on the 17-18th next week.
What further complicated the situation was the renewed military tension between the United States and Iran. As the United States attacked additional targets inside Iran and Iran vowed retaliation, crude prices (WTI) surged to 94.25 dollars, up 3.03% from the previous day. Fueled by concerns about renewed inflation and expectations of further rate hikes, there was a unusual combination of "stock selling and gold selling in times of crisis," contrary to the usual patterns.
As a result, the yen strengthened across the board, briefly rising to the high 152s against the dollar (low around 152.88 yen), marking roughly the highest level in about six months since mid-February. The Nikkei Stock Average fell by 1,130.51 points (-1.70%) to 65,269.33, down for the third day. Export-related stocks were sold on fears of a stronger yen, while some domestic-demand-related sectors like information and telecommunications rose against the trend. Gold fell to 4,400.00 dollars, down 1.71%, amid renewed inflation expectations and rate hike prospects, and Bitcoin also traded weak due to geopolitical risk concerns.
