According to the August employment statistics (seasonally adjusted) released by the U.S. Department of Labor on the 4th, nonfarm payrolls, which are highly sensitive to economic trends, increased by 162,000 from the previous month. A sharp rise from last month (revised +21,000). The increase significantly exceeded market expectations of +56,000. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, the same as last month. The labor market remains solid. The Fed plans to assess inflation indicators such as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August to determine whether to raise rates at the mid-month policy meeting this month. Employment by industry turned positive with leisure-related jobs increasing by 62,000 and local government education sector up by 42,000. Manufacturing, which President Trump is aiming to revive, rose by 16,000, while healthcare increased by 13,000. On the other hand, information-related sectors, believed to be affected by the spread of AI, decreased by 23,000. While the labor market remains firm, inflation exceeds the Fed's 2% target. The Fed plans to scrutinize August CPI and other inflation indicators when considering a rate hike at the policy meeting on the 15th and 16th.

In response, analysts' probability of a rate increase at the September FOMC rose. One economist comments that “even the most hawkish proponents of rate cuts would have difficulty finding justification to keep rates unchanged based on August employment data.” Also, according to CME Group’s FedWatch, the probability of a September rate increase that had fallen from 60% to below 50% by the end of last week rose again to 60% on the 4th, fluctuating rapidly up and down.
