In the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, the annual U.S. economic conference regarded as the main summer event, Chair Jerome Powell delivered a speech. In this speech, the chair stressed that there is “work to be done” unless core inflation slows, signaling a hawkish stance that leaves room for possible rate hikes within the year. Powell has repeatedly stated his goal of maintaining price stability, but his previous skepticism toward forward guidance on monetary policy had left the market uncertain about future policy. However, in this speech, one can say he clearly indicated a direction for the Fed’s policy for the first time since taking office. Nevertheless, he still stated in the speech that, outside of the financial crisis, “the role of forward guidance should be limited.” Therefore, it remains difficult to expect concrete views on forward guidance at future FOMC meetings. This tends to make the related markets more opaque and arguably keeps a constant element of surprise.
Although the market has somewhat adjusted to the signals suggesting rate hikes, more caution is warranted for forthcoming U.S. economic indicators. After the speech, in CME FedWatch, the probability of a September rate hike surged to about 60%. Still, in the near term, the U.S. employment report released on September 4th will be a key guide, and depending on the result, the current hawkish view could be challenged.
