Last week's New York gold futures (near month) closed at $4,690.4, up $243.3 from the previous week. Last week, I judged that the weekly chart had clearly surpassed the 15-week moving average, indicating a near-bottom bottoming, and this week my conviction has grown stronger. Last week, questions about the trust in the dollar resurfaced. On the 19th, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced, on an emergency basis, a doubling of the pace of outright purchases of long-term government bonds. The market was surprised by this unexpected move, and long-term interest rates briefly fell. However, rates quickly returned to their original level, and the effect lasted only about a day and a half. Meanwhile, the dollar index dropped sharply from around 99.5 to the 98.7 range, and even as rates recovered, the dollar did not return to the 99 level. Normally, rising U.S. long-term yields would attract the yield on U.S. Treasuries, leading to dollar buying and a higher dollar index. From the viewpoint of a rate-differential market where higher yields mean a stronger dollar, there is a possibility that the market has begun shifting its gaze toward assessing the risk of the United States itself, wondering why U.S. rates are so high.
