Be Extra Cautious on the Days You Win? The Inner Details of Trading Not Revealed by "Profit" Alone
When trades end in the positive, do you think, “Today was a good trade” just because of that?
Of course, it’s important to keep turning a profit.
However, to improve your trading, you need to check not only the final profit and loss, but also how much unrealized loss you had before reaching that profitas well.
Even with the same profit, the content of the trade is different
For example, suppose there are the following two trades.
A: With almost no unrealized losses, finally+5,000 yen
B: In the middle, unrealized losses grew to−30,000 yenbefore ending at+5,000 yen
If you only look at the realized profit, both are the same+5,000 yen.
However, the content of the trades and the risks taken were very different.
In trade B, even if the price recovered this time and became profitable, if market conditions had been slightly different, it could have resulted in a large loss.
Nevertheless, if you judge only by the outcome and
“Because it made a profit, this trade was correct,”
you may miss issues such as late stop losses or holding too many positions.
“How much you won” and “how much unrealized loss you carried”
Realized profit and loss is the final result of the trade.
On the other hand, the day’s maximum unrealized loss provides material for consideringhow much risk you were exposed to before reaching that result.
Also, even on days ending in a loss, if you were able to cut losses quickly according to the rules, it isn’t necessarily a bad trade.
What matters is not just whether you won or lost, buthow you won and how you lost.
You can see your tendency on a calendar
If you lay out daily results in a calendar format, trends that aren’t apparent from a single trade become easier to spot.
For example,
・Losses are heavier on certain days of the week
・A string of wins followed by a big loss
・Maximum unrealized loss is large relative to profits
・After a big loss day, losses continue to grow
such patterns exist.
To make it easier to review these daily trades, we created the calendar-style indicator“Tenda Calendar Pro”.
On MT4/MT5 charts, you can display daily realized profit and loss and that day’s maximum unrealized loss in a calendar format.
Display position, text color, and background color can be adjusted to fit your chart. You can also specify a magic number to filter trades for verification.
