Just choosing one thing can change everything
I used to trade FX without knowing Dow Theory, and now I can't believe it
If I had known sooner, I could have changed sooner.
When I first started FX, I was desperate to stack indicators. Moving averages, MACD, RSI, Bollinger Bands — I would enter only when multiple indicators aligned, in a quest for the “holy grail.”
The results were terrible. Even when indicators aligned, I still lost. If they didn’t align, I’d enter somehow and lose. With no idea what was wrong, my funds just kept shrinking.
The turning point came when I seriously studied Dow Theory. Define the trend by higher highs and higher lows or lower highs and lower lows. Build market awareness from higher timeframes downward. The moment I adhered to these two,“I realized how much I had been trading while ignoring the structure of the market”.
Indicators show the results of the market. They are not the market’s structure itself. Looking at indicators without reading the structure was like sailing with only a compass and no map.
Three things Dow Theory changed
After rebuilding my trading around Dow Theory, three concrete changes occurred.
First, the basis for entries became verbalizable.“Daily uptrend continues, 4-hour pullback forming, confirm Dow shift on the 1-hour” — I started entering only when I could explain this each time. It was no longer a matter of intuition but a accumulation of facts guiding entry decisions.
Next,I stopped hesitating about stop losses.Because the basis was clear, I could define the moment the basis broke as the stop-loss timing. The rule “if the recent low is breached, stop loss” became explicit, and I stopped worrying about unrealized losses.
And,I learned from losing trades.Entries with a basis allow you to analyze “why you lost” even when you lose. Entries without a basis end with “why did I lose?” no one can answer. Only trades that allow for reflection lead to growth.
The quality of my trading changed completely before and after learning Dow Theory. Now, in the second half, I’ll explain a concrete method to apply Dow Theory to actual trading.
