[Beginner-friendly] Gold and USD/JPY, which one should you start with? | Conclusion: Do both
I want to start FX. But there are too many currency pairs, I don’t know what to touch.
There are two common candidates people talk about: Gold (XAUUSD) and USDJPY (the dollar/yen pair).
“Gold seems to be profitable.” “USDJPY is beginner-friendly.” “Which one is better in the end?”
This time, in answer to that question, I’ll honestly share my 12 years of experience trading both.
First, the conclusion
Do both.
However, there is a sequence. It’s best to solidify the basics with USDJPY first, then challenge Gold.
I’ll explain the reasons below.
Features of USDJPY
① Volatility is moderate
The daily price movement of USDJPY is about 50–100 pips. It’s gentler than Gold. For beginners learning the basics of trading, this mildness is ideal.
If price moves too aggressively, it’s hard to make calm judgments. First, in a calm market, train your body to go through the cycle “entry → take profit → stop loss.”
② Narrow spreads
In domestic accounts, USDJPY spreads are around 0.2 pips. It’s one of the narrowest spreads of currency pairs worldwide.
③ Technicals work straightforwardly
Especially during the Tokyo session, USDJPY reacts straightforwardly to moving averages. Touch the MA and bounce, touch and bounce. Classic textbook movements are easier to see.
Learning a method and actually feeling that “this truly moves as described” is most evident in USDJPY during the Tokyo time.
④ Abundant information
USDJPY is the currency pair most traded by Japanese traders. Japanese-language information is overwhelmingly abundant. News, analyses, blogs, videos — you won’t run out of learning materials.
Features of Gold
① High volatility
Gold moves about $30–$50 per day. It’s several times more volatile than USDJPY. So with the same lot size, profits can be larger, but so can losses.
This degree of volatility is Gold’s charm and, at the same time, its danger.
② Possibility of meaningful price ranges
Taking 10 pips in USDJPY vs taking $10 in Gold — Gold is overwhelmingly easier to achieve. When a trend forms, it runs strongly.
The biggest appeal of Gold is the potential for large profits from a single trade.
③ Tendency to trend
Gold tends to move in one direction once a trend forms. Especially during London to New York hours, once the direction is set, moves of $20–$30 are not uncommon.
It pairs exceptionally well with trend-following techniques.
④ High risk of drawdown
High volatility means the damage from counter-trend moves can be substantial. Entering Gold with the same lot size as USDJPY can quickly blow your account.
In fact, in my Discord community, there are many reports of being “ruined by Gold.”
Why the order USDJPY → Gold is better
The reason is simple.
Losing in USDJPY isn’t fatal. Losing in Gold can be.
For beginners who haven’t yet learned both the technique and proper position sizing, challenging high-volatility Gold is too dangerous.
Learn to use moving averages in USDJPY, drill entry and stop-loss rules until you’re consistently profitable, and only then challenge Gold. This order is the safest and fastest path.
But in the end, doing both is the strongest
Trading only USDJPY or only Gold limits daily opportunities.
Why? Because the active trading windows are different.
USDJPY:Mainly during Tokyo hours (9:00–15:00). Opportunities concentrate around the market open.
Gold:Mainly London–New York hours (16:00–2:00 next day). Tokyo hours see little movement.
So, if you only trade USDJPY, your opportunities are limited to Tokyo time. If you only trade Gold, your opportunities are after London open.
If you trade both, you’ll have opportunities from morning to night.
During Tokyo hours, USDJPY. After London, Gold. This division is the strongest strategy.
In my community, many members are succeeding by trading both. Muna has earned 650,000 yen per month using Gold + USDJPY as a dual approach.
What you need to trade both
“I get that trading both is good. But isn’t it tough to monitor two currency pairs at the same time?”
Indeed, opening two charts, checking both MAs, calculating TP/SL for both — doing this manually is honestly hard.
That’s why I created indicators dedicated to each currency pair.
KURAMA GOLD SIGNAL PRO (KGS):Gold-only. When a signal appears, place orders at the displayed TP/SL. A 7-layer filter automatically blocks dangerous situations.

KURAMA USDJPY SIGNAL (KUS):USDJPY-only. ATR × session automatic judgment to optimize TP/SL. Specializes in Tokyo-time scalping.

Both share the same design philosophy and the same操作方法. If you use one, you’ll quickly become proficient with the other as well.
If you put KGS and KUS on both charts, you only trade the currency pair that shows a signal. Monitoring becomes zero burden.
Master the method, then use tools to enhance strength
Indicators are just tools. Following signals alone can still yield good results.
But understanding why a signal occurs at that point changes the quality of your trades. You’ll have less hesitation and can enter confidently.
My moving-average method uses the same logic for Gold and USDJPY. Even if the currency pair changes, as long as you understand the MA principles, you can adapt.
PAPI earned 430,000 yen per month only from USDJPY short trades with this method.
Muna earned 650,000 yen per month with Gold + USDJPY.
Both study the same教材 and share trades daily in the same community.
Summary
・Beginners should start with USDJPY. It has moderate volatility and straightforward technicals.
・Solidify the basics in USDJPY, then challenge Gold.
・Ultimately, doing both is strongest. Different trading times mean double the opportunities. Tokyo hours for USDJPY; after London for Gold.
・If monitoring both is too demanding, rely on dedicated indicators.
