Lesson 6: Wall (4): Is Bollinger Band contrarian trading a “wall” or a “trap”?

Aren’t you letting your funds dwindle with such simple rules?BB (Bollinger Bands). However, no indicator is more prone to misinterpretation and traps among traders than this one.

■ Max’s history: the “price you pay” from relentlessly exhaustive testing

 In the early part of my career, I became obsessed with the possibilities of Bollinger Bands, devoting an insane amount of time to verification. I tested every parameter and performed backtests on every currency pair. 

What I learned is that a winning system can be built depending on logic and parameters, butprofitability can be extremely sensitive to changes in market volatility. If you rely too much on the main logic, you risk losing everything when the market suddenly shifts. That was my conclusion.

■The true value of Bollinger Bands as a “wall”

 Now, I use Bollinger Bands not as the main signal, but asan “auxiliary wall”.BB2σand3σ indicate statistical limits, but markets sometimes ignore statistics and push ahead. Autonomous traders use BB not as a place to hit, but as an aid to predicting when the momentum might soon reach its limit.
