Spot gold prices in the United States and Israel rose sharply after Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran, and the high so far this morning in the Tokyo market is 5,393.02, up 130 dollars from the previous week’s close. Domestic gold market (front-month) opened at 27,330 yen, up 820 yen from last week’s close, but has since been revised. The U.S. attack on Iran was largely anticipated by last week, but the removal of Ayatollah Khamenei was not. Is it permissible under international law for a national leader to be killed so easily? Russia, China, and many other countries and international organizations criticize this attack as a violation of international law and a violation of sovereignty.

The United States has branded Ayatollah Khamenei as “one of the most evil figures in history” and argued that it was necessary to eliminate Iran’s military and nuclear threats. American proponents view Iran’s nuclear development and support for regional armed groups (Hezbollah, Hamas, etc.) as threats and justify military action. Japan cannot question the American claim. Some experts and policymakers have noted that the assassination of a national leader could set a dangerous precedent that undermines international norms. In news reports, Iran, attacked, claimed it struck 14 U.S. military bases in the UAE and other locations and blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for oil transportation. Iran has issued a statement saying it will undertake “unprecedented, severe retaliatory strikes,” and a retaliatory chain is anticipated. However, who will be Iran’s next leader?
