On January 30, President Trump nominated Kevin Warsh as the next chairman of the Fed. Warsh previously served as a member of the Fed Board from 2006 to 2011, and was involved in the response to the Lehman Brothers collapse (the 2008 financial crisis), and his experience is regarded as substantial. In terms of economy and monetary policy, he had traditionally been viewed as hawkish, with a focus on curbing inflation. Recently, he has shown a more dovish stance, earning Trump’s trust, but he is also described as a hawk wearing a dove’s mask. Trump assesses Warsh as “believing in easing the rate,” and sees him as someone who can align with his economic policies. However, the market perceives him as hawkish and may react with caution toward rate cuts, which led to a significant drop in gold prices.
