Although this is the last report of the year, the rise in gold prices has been the major theme across finance and commodities. Looking at the rise from the year's low to the October peak of 4,381.07 dollars, NY gold (near-month) rose 68%. Domestic gold prices (front-month) started January at a low of 13,181 and continue to reach new highs, recording a 71% rise up to the December 22 high of 22,555. As for stocks, the Nikkei Average started January at 39,945.42 yen, with a high on November 4 of 52,636.87, a 31.8% increase. The Dow Jones started January at 42,660, with a high in December of 48,886, a 14.6% rise, and the NASDAQ up 23.8%, with gold showing the most pronounced gain.
